The Power of Light
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!!!!!!
Growing up, one of my dream jobs was to work for National Geographic. The October 2001 edition of National Geographic had an article on the “Power of Light” with this quotation:
“Light reveals the world to us. Body and soul crave it. Light sets our biological clocks. It triggers in our brains the sensations of color. Light feeds us, supplying the energy of plants to grow. It inspires us with special effects like rainbows and sunsets. … Scientists don’t fully understand what light is or what it can do. They just know that it will illuminate our future.”
This quote has JESUS written all over it. The only thing that will illuminate our past, present and future is Jesus Christ. Light “triggers in our brains the sensations of color…” My mother-in-law once described encountering Jesus as everything in life changing from black and white to color! I love this explanation.
Tonight at church we had our Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. It was spectacular. After the sea of radiant candles tonight, I couldn’t help but write about the light of Christ again. Did you know there are 76 references to light in the New Testament? The references are used in the following ways:
1.) GOD IS LIGHT. John tells us, “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)
2.) MANKIND BY NATURE ABHORS THE LIGHT. “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19)
3.) JESUS IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. “In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness could not comprehend it.” (John 1:4-5)
4.)WHEN WE’RE SAVED, WE COME INTO THE LIGHT. “For ye were sometimes [in the past] darkness, but now you are light in the Lord: walk as children of light…” (Ephesians 5:8)
5.) BELIEVERS ARE TO SHARE THE LIGHT WITH OTHERS SO THAT THEY TOO CAN BE LIGHT “[we are ministers whose responsibility it is] …To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance…” (Acts 26:18)
